MMIWG Advocacy Film

‘one of our own’

With the Village of Solomon being a strong public advocate for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls awareness movement, an Alaska Native community in a Region with multiple remote communities, within THE state that is home to almost half of all the Tribal Nations in America (574 tribes, Alaska has 229 tribes), the tribe realized the annual public event in Nome, Alaska on May 5th (the nationally recognized day of MMIWG by the Biden Administration) was not as far reaching as the tribe desired. Given the frustration of travel logistics for National, State and local administrations to attend in support of the event, the idea of a visual awareness tool came about by Development Coordinator, Deilah Johnson. This is when the script of a short fiction film was created. The intent is to spread awareness, support and advocacy for MMIWG efforts around the world.

Quyanakpak for your interest in viewing this film.

It has been a wonderful experience from start to end. The intent of this film is solely to raise awareness surrounding MMIWG and mmip. I work for the Village of Solomon. I’m on the council. I’m an advocate. I am indigenous. My family is Alaskan native, my friends and coworkers, my tribe are all Alaskan native. This issue stems from all of the inequalities our people have faced decade after decade. The resiliency of indigenous cultural people, remains- but the strength in solidarity surrounding protection of our lands, our subsistence, our ways of life, our families, our multigenerational trauma continues to be tested. Village of Solomon has been facilitating mmip advocacy events publicly in Nome. This film was created to spread further than Nome Alaska. Our first MMIWG walk, was 2019. My friend, Florence Okpealuk from Wales, who worked at the local hospital went missing August 31, 2020 & is still missing with no arrests, no body, her cell phone, shoes and clothes found out of a tent on a beach. The advocacy efforts heightened. The frustration, unanswered questions, injustice, case abandonment occurred locally & advocacy began stemming from anger. This is our time to be movers and shakers. If you know or love an indigenous person, stand for them, with them and beside them. This is a global issue, but I need changes in Alaska now. I need changes in Nome, Alaska - Help us spread the word.
