ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR HOUSEHOLDS

Good Morning Village of Solomon Nome Community Households,

THIS IS CURRENTLY ONLY OPEN TO NOME RESIDENTS!

Please continue to follow our website if/when we are able to open up this program to serve you outside of Nome. We are very lucky that VOS is able to serve you in other programs, several tribes do not serve members outside of their headquarters. Please be patient.

The VOS Environmental Dept. has been working diligently in acquiring resources to implement a residential household weatherization program. There has been significant planning and leveraging resources, but we are so excited to announce the opening of our Dow Impact Fund Retrofit program application for those of you who have had an Energy Assessment conducted in your household by our partners, Michigan State University. With that assessment, we will utilize the recommendations in securing a plan going forward to retrofit your home. We have leveraged funding resources to apply and achieve as many home improvements as possible.

If you have not had an assessment completed yet, please reach out to Deilah at deilah@villageofsolomon.org to get signed up for the upcoming home energy assessment list early Spring and we’ll get you eligible to this program. The Environmental Dept is seeking 10 homes to retrofit this upcoming season of June 1st- October 1st, 2025.

Due to this upcoming timeline, scheduling is going to be key to ensure we have all improvements prepared to get these retrofits completed.

Aside from serving our VOS households, we will also be able to train a local Nome VOS Tribal member to assist and learn how to conduct these weatherization efforts on households.

This is a longtime goal, as a tribal community - primarily residing in a subarctic climate, with massive climate change impacts, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, high energy uses (utility bills and heating fuel expenses) but also in alignment with our Resolution 2019-02, Supporting the Paris Climate Accord in reducing the demand for greenhouse gas emissions. The main idea is to achieve less and less use for burning fuel which directly contributes to the global warming challenges our world has been facing.

Some examples of allowable retrofits; upgraded efficient window installations, upgraded electrical wiring, insulation/caulking/sealing vapor barrier leaks within the home- all of these activities are supported by the energy assessment. Which is vital to implementing a successful program.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to Deilah. Otherwise, if your home assessment results have been reviewed by your household and our MSU partners - please fill out this application, which will prompt a scheduled review meeting to get on the calendar for the retrofits beginning late May or early June 2025.

Application is here, please submit to deilah@villageofsolomon.org
